IB Math Exam Day Essentials: What to Bring, What to Avoid, and How to Stay Calm
Exam day is finally here. After weeks or months of studying, the last thing you want is to lose marks—or worse, be disqualified—because you forgot a key item or broke a simple rule.
For IB Math students (SL and HL), exam day demands precision, calm, and full compliance with IB regulations. This guide covers everything you need to know to walk into the exam room confident and fully prepared.
What to Bring to the IB Math Exam Room
Packing the right items removes unnecessary stress and helps you focus entirely on the paper.
IB-Approved Checklist
Pens and pencils
Bring at least two black or blue pens and two sharpened pencils. Avoid gel pens, as they can smudge and are often not permitted.
Approved calculator
- Required for Paper 2 (and Paper 3 for HL)
- Must be an IB-approved model
- Calculator memory will be cleared before and/or after the exam
- Ensure it is fully charged or bring spare batteries
Eraser and ruler
Essential for graphs, diagrams, and clean corrections.
Water bottle
Clear bottle only, with no labels. Staying hydrated helps concentration.
IB candidate ID and exam timetable
Used to verify your identity and ensure correct exam entry.
Comfortable clothing
Dress in layers—exam rooms can vary in temperature, and you won’t be allowed to leave to adjust clothing.
Pro tip: Pack everything the night before in a clear pouch. Many exam centres do not allow pencil cases on desks.
Calculator Rules You Must Follow
Calculator compliance is one of the most common exam-day issues.
