Can You Earn the IB Diploma with a 2 in a Higher Level (HL) Subject?
Short answer: No.
Under the rules set by the International Baccalaureate Organization, scoring a 2 in any Higher Level (HL) subject normally disqualifies a student from receiving the full IB Diploma, even if the total point score is 24 or higher.
IB Diploma Award Requirements (Current Framework)
To be awarded the full IB Diploma, students must meet all of the following conditions.
Core Requirements
- Submit a valid Extended Essay (EE)
- Receive at least a D grade in Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
- Complete all Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements
Failure in any of these areas results in no diploma.
Overall Points Requirement
- A minimum of 24 total points across six subjects (including core bonus points)
Subject-Specific Minimum Requirements
- No “N” (no grade awarded) in any subject
- At least a 3 in every HL subject
- No more than one score of 2 at Standard Level (SL)
- No more than three scores of 3 or below in total across all subjects
Because of these rules, a 2 in any HL subject automatically prevents the diploma from being awarded, regardless of total points.
What Happens If You Score a 2 in an HL Subject?
You Will Not Receive the IB Diploma If:
- You score a 2 in any HL subject
