Revolution of 1830 and the July Monarchy of Louis Philippe
Revolution of 1830 and the July Monarchy of Louis Philippe Notes
The term "Revolution of 1830" primarily refers to the July Revolution in France, which triggered a wave of similar, though often less successful, uprisings across Europe. Lasting just three days, the revolution in Paris overthrew the conservative Bourbon monarch Charles X and established a constitutional monarchy under his more moderate cousin, Louis-Philippe.
Revolution of 1830
The July Ordinances (1830) issued by Charles X restricted freedom of the press, dissolved the Chamber of Deputies, and limited the franchise.
These measures triggered anger across Paris, leading to the “Three Glorious Days” (27–29 July 1830) when barricades were built and fighting broke out.
Charles X abdicated and fled, marking the end of the Bourbon Restoration.
The revolution was fueled by both political frustration (liberals demanding representation) and social grievances(workers protesting hardship).
Louis Philippe was the "Citizen King" who reigned in France from 1830 to 1848, known for his constitutional monarchy known as the July Monarchy. His rule was characterized by the dominance of the upper bourgeoisie, promotion of colonial expansion in Algeria, and a generally conservative policy
The July Monarchy of Louis Philippe (1830–1848)
Louis Philippe was called the “Citizen King” because he dressed modestly and came from the Orléans branch, seen as more liberal.
His regime was based on the Charter of 1830, which extended voting rights (though still limited to property-owning men).
Politically, the July Monarchy favored the bourgeoisie (middle class), who gained influence at the expense of nobles.
